Friday Five for 14 October 2022
Oct. 14th, 2022 05:40 pm1. How many languages do you speak?
Fluently? Just two, German and English. I'm also okay-ish at Japanese, meaning: I understand around 70% of what I hear/read but am super bad at speaking it myself.
2. What is your mother tongue?
German.
3. What is a language that you would like to learn and why?
Polish. I'm half-Polish myself, but my mother would only let my dad speak German with me when I was a kid, allegedly because she was afraid I'd only be able to speak with a Polish accent otherwise. Which is ... ????? I mean, she already knew my cousins, who did grow up speaking both and have no accent in either language. I have no idea why she thought it would be different for me. Or why my dad even went along with it. In any case, it still makes me sad. I do know a few words and did pick up some phrases in the brief time we actually lived in Poland when I was around ten years old, but I really wish I could've just learned it as a second native language.
4. Does it bother you when people speak a language you don't know in front of you? Why or why not?
Not really. I get why some people feel left out, though, so I try not to do it myself.
5. Speak to me.
Like ... in German? Das sind ja immer meine Lieblingsfragen. Man soll einfach irgendwas sagen und vergisst direkt jeden Gedanken den man je hatte :'D
